This Day in History: 1857-12-29

2nd Opium War. British and French force of 6,000 men, including 59th Regiment (later 2nd East Lancashires) successfully assault the 6-miles long, 25-feet high and 20-feet thick walls of Canton (now Guangzhou). The first man onto the walls is Major Luard of the 59th, followed by a Frenchman, followed by the Bandmaster of the 59th.
