This Day in History: 1761-12-27

Seven Years War. Having played a major role in the capture of Belle Isle, off the coast of Brittany, France, in April, and then remained to garrison the island, the 30th  Foot (later 1st East Lancashires) embarks under orders for Portsmouth. During the voyage home, the unarmed transport Hopewell, carrying the commanding officer and 2 companies, is separated from the fleet in a storm and captured by privateers from Dunkirk. Carried into Dieppe, they are held there until May 1762, when they are exchanged for an equal number of French prisoners.
