This Day in History: 1860-06-27

New Zealand.  In their first action of the Maori Wars, 40th Regiment (later 1st South Lancashires) assaults Puketakauere Pah, losing 30 dead and 21 wounded. As a result, the traditional uniform of Shako, tight red tunic and stock was quickly discarded and replaced by a loose blue tunic and a forage cap – much better for the bush fighting conditions.
