This Day in History: 1801-11-26

After a year of garrison duties on Malta, both 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) embark at Valetta under orders for Minorca. They board ship ‘at a late hour,’ due to ‘the occasion being taken for some insobriety from the extraordinary cheapness of wine and the wish of having a farewell bout.’
