This Day in History: 1849-12-24

Troopship Apollo calls at the island of Buru, in the Moluccas archipelago. She is now 190 days out from Cork, Ireland, carrying the 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires) under orders for Hong Kong. She will spend a week here, watering and re-provisioning. The officers hunt wild boar and deer, and are entertained by the Dutch Governor, who gives a ball in their honour.
