This Day in History: 1914-10-23

First Battle of Ypres. Battle of Langemarck. Near the Kortekeer Caberet (a cafe on the Kortekeer crossroads near Pilckem), 1st Loyals launch a successful bayonet charge across open fields. With a bugle sounding the charge, and a loud cheer, the battalion sweeps forward, and in less than 10 minutes captures 600 prisoners and takes the enemy trenches, which then have to be temporarily abandoned due to fire from our own artillery.
