War of American Independence. American raiders in a sloop and several gunboats attempt to take Diamond Island, a strong point on the British line of communication at the southern end of Lake George. They are decisively repulsed by the garrison, a detachment of the 47th Foot (later 1st Loyals), which holes the sloop, damages a gunboat and smashes ‘many’ other boats to pieces. The raiders are pursued to the eastern shore of the lake, where they are forced to burn their boats and flee into the hills.
