This Day in History: 1944-09-22

Operation (Market) Garden. 1st East Lancashires overcome determined resistance to capture the little town of Bladel, near Eindhoven. Amongst the many Dutch townspeople who turned up wanting to help was “Half-Track Henry, ” who arrived in his own half-track semi-armoured car, with a troop of 5 comrades, all festooned with captured weapons, ready not only to give information, but to go forward and get it. He wanted to be enrolled into the East Lancashires and to fight with them to the end of the war ‘if not the end of the world!’ He was unofficially taken onto the official ration strength ‘for just so long as higher authority was unaware of this international agreement.’
