This Day in History: 1781-10-18

59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires) lands on Gibraltar to re-inforce the garrison during the Great Siege by the French and Spanish 1779-1783. Unfortunately the brig carrying their wives and children, together with the regimental baggage, camp equipment and clothing, is dismasted in a storm and captured by the enemy. The families, but not the baggage, are delivered to Gibraltar under a flag of truce two months later, the Spaniards having treated them ‘with great humanity and attention.’
