This Day in History: 1795-05-17

40th and 59th Foot (later 1st South Lancs and 2nd East Lancs respectively) evacuated from Bremen after the disastrous Flanders Campaign against the Revolutionary French. After one of the most bitterly cold and ice-ridden winters in European history, much of which they had to endure in the open, the troops are weak and debilitated, yet adverse winds keep them storm-bound in their ships for two weeks before they are finally able to sail for home on 1 June.
