This Day in History: 1777-10-16

War of American Independence. At Saratoga, vastly outnumbered, surrounded, and with no hope of relief, General  Burgoyne agrees to surrender the remnants of his exhausted, wet, cold,  and starving army. The 47th Foot (later 1st Loyals) is one of the few still-effective battalions left. Granted the full honours of war, the next day the British march past to stack their arms, as the American and British bands play ‘Yankee Doodle’ and ‘The British Grenadiers.’ Held as prisoners for years until the end of the war, they escaped in their hundreds, with at least 60 soldiers of the 47th making it back to British lines.
