This Day in History: 1961-07-16

At 10.30 in the morning, near Weeton camp in the Lancashire Fylde, the 08.50 passenger rail service from Colne to Fleetwood smashes into a stationary freight train loaded with ballast. Seven people die in Lancashire’s worst rail disaster of the 20th Century. Among them are Lt Col Harry Green and Major (QM) Walter Armstrong, Commanding Officer and Quartermaster respectively of 5th Loyals (TA). They were on their way to catch the Fleetwood ferry to the Isle of Man, to visit the Battalion’s newly-formed Manx Company.
