This Day in History: 1857-12-30

2nd Opium War. Capture of Canton (now Guangzhou) completed. Chinese losses are 650 dead, 200 of them civilians killed by the bombardment; British / French 10, of whom 2 are an officer and soldier from the 59th Regiment (later 2nd East Lancashires). 430 cannons captured. Battle Honour ‘Canton,’ awarded to 59th Regiment and still carried by the Regiment today, is unique in the British Army.
