This Day in History: 1843-12-29

Battle of Maharajpore. 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) advances nearly a mile over an open plain in the face of intense artillery fire to take 3 entrenched batteries in succession, each one desperately defended by Mahratta infantry. The Commanding Officer falls at the muzzle of the enemy guns, as does his successor, and the regiment suffers 180 other casualties. The Maharajpore Drum, captured this day, can be seen in the Museum today.
