This Day in History: 1715-11-12

Jacobite Rebellion. At the battle known to history as the Preston Fight, the Lancashire Militia under Sir Henry Houghton suffer heavy losses storming rebel barricades in Church St, Preston. The two days of savage fighting in the streets of the town end the rebellion, which had aimed to place James Stuart – ‘The Old Pretender’ – on the throne. It is arguably the last battle ever fought on English soil.
