This Day in History: 1842-10-12

1st Afghan War.  Having exacted retribution for the massacre of the Kabul Garrison earlier in the year, the British so-called ‘Army of Retribution’ leaves Kabul to begin a fighting withdrawal to India through the Khurd Khabul and Khyber passes. The columns are constantly under actual or threatened attack, and the 40th (later 1st South Lancashires) , is frequently in action.
