This Day in History: 1808-07-12

Under the command of Lt Gen Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington), a force of nearly 11,000 men, including the 1st /40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) sails from the Cove of Cork, Ireland. Their secret orders are to land in Portugal to support the insurgency which has broken out against the invading French army, and thus initiate the Peninsular War.
