This Day in History: 1854-12-03

Detachments of the 40th Regiment (later 1st South Lancashires), including a mounted infantry troop, part of the mixed Government force of police and military which attacks the Eureka Stockade at Ballarat, Australia, in the only “battle” ever to take place on Australian soil. The stockade had been set up by rebel miners protesting against oppressive Government regulations and taxation.
