Admiral Lord Howe sails from Spithead with 31 sail of the line, 12 other warships and a convoy of 31 supply ships to relieve Gibraltar, which has been under siege by the French and Spanish since 1779. Aboard the men of war are 800 men of the 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires), under orders to reinforce the Gibraltar Garrison
