This Day in History: 1857-07-11

An open boat sets out from Bangka Island, where nearly 900 troops and crew from the wrecked transport HMS Transit are now marooned, to summon help from the British colony of Singapore, some 200 miles away. The castaways include 2 full companies (117 officers and men) of the 59th Foot, who are on their way to reinforce their disease-stricken Regiment in Hong Kong.
