This Day in History: 1916-07-10

Battle of the Somme. 8th Loyals take and hold German trenches near Ovillers, but at heavy cost: 4 officers and 33 men killed; 49 men missing ‘believed killed’; and 5 officers and 156 men wounded. The Battalion holds its newly-won trenches until relieved the next day, despite being opposed at one point during the battle by at least 3 Prussian battalions.
