This Day in History: 1914-09-14

World War I. In their first general action of the war, 1st Loyals attack the sugar factor at Troyon. They take the objective, but the enemy is in great strength and force a withdrawal to a previously-held position. The cost is enormous, and effectively destroys the pre-war battalion which went to war just 4 weeks before.  14 officers and over 500 NCO’s and men are killed, wounded or missing. Post-war, the Regimental Memorial to the 1st Battalion is erected at Troyon. It remains there to this day.
