1st Afghan War. At Beni Badam, Captain ‘Blanco’ White of the 40th (later 1st South Lancashires), is mentioned in despatches ‘for the gallantry displayed by him and the (light) companies under his command in ascending the mountains and driving the enemy from their positions.’ Lieutenant Wakefield takes the 40th’s Grenadier Company to clear a detached hill occupied by the enemy, which they did ‘with much spirit.’
