This Day in History: 1855-09-08

Crimea. Battle of the Great Redan. After nearly three months besieging Sepastopol, the Allies assault the Malakoff and Redan redoubts. British, including the 30th Regiment (later  1st East Lancashires) take the Redan but are forced to withdraw with heavy casualties. 47th Regiment (later 1st Loyals) held in reserve but suffer casualties from enemy artillery fire. French hold the Malakoff, which forces the Russians to abandon the city the next day, effectively ending the war.
