1st/ 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires), 1,000 strong, embarks at Gosport under orders for the East Indies, and secret orders to join an expedition to re-take the Cape of Good Hope. The Cape had been returned to the Dutch by the Peace of Amiens which ended the War of the Second Coalition, but when war with France again broke out, Britain was not about to permit an enemy port to exist at such a vital point on the sea route to the East.
