British force including 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires) storm Fort Cornelis, Java. The massive fortress, 1 mile long and from 600 to 800 yards wide, and defended by some 6,000 men and 280 cannon, falls after bitter fighting. British suffer 630 casualties, but count over 1,000 enemy dead within the walls and capture 5,000 defenders
