This Day in History: 1944-08-12

Normandy. 1st East Lancashires, advancing south from the Orne against the neck of the Falaise pocket, capture the little town of Bois Halbout in a spirited quick attack, then exploit to just west of Falaise. A close friendship between the town – fondly re-titled “Boiled Halibut” by the troops – and the regiment has been maintained ever since.
