This Day in History: 1776-06-08

Battle of Trois-Rivieres, Canada. 1,000 British troops, including the 47th Regiment (later 1st Loyals), defeat twice their number of Americans in the last battle of the American War of Independence to be fought on Canadian soil. The wife of Private Robert Middleton of the 47th, on a quest to find milk for her husband who is fighting in the battle, surprises six Americans in a farmhouse. She berates the startled rebels for their treachery to the King, demands that they hand her their weapons, then hands them as very sheepish prisoners over to some Royal Navy sailors.
