This Day in History: 1763-07-18

In mid-Atlantic, a sloop carrying new orders overtakes the fleet which is at last carrying the 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) home to Britain from Cuba. Reduced to only 212 officers and men, and worn out after a hard campaign first to capture the disease-ridden island, and then to garrison it for a year, the Regiment has never been home since it was first formed in Nova Scotia 45 years before. But the sloop carries orders that they are to turn about and return to – Nova Scotia. The troops as not best pleased!
