This Day in History: 1718-07-13

30th Foot (later 1st East Lancashires), serving as Marines in the fleet of Admiral Sir George Byng, is disembarked at Minorca, then a British possession, to defend the island from Spanish attempts to recapture it. The Regiment is to remain there for 7 years, guarding the forts and building the Royal Road, the first to link one end of the island to the other, parts of which remain in use today.
