This Day in History: 1857-12-07

Two companies (117 officers and men) of the 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires), finally join their Regiment in Hong Kong. It is nearly 9 months since they began their journey in Ireland, during which time they have been marooned on a tropical island after the sinking of their transport HMS Transit, and diverted to Calcutta for 4 months of garrison duty when the Indian Mutiny broke out. In only 11 days, they will depart again with their Regiment for active service in the 2nd Opium War.
