This Day in History: 1849-09-07

After 16 days camped on the paradise of Ihla Grande, Brazil, during which they had recovered their health and thoroughly fumigated their cholera-stricken troopship Apollo, the 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires) re-embark to resume their voyage to Hong Kong, their knapsacks stuffed with fresh oranges and lemons. Yet after only two weeks at sea, the ship is again short of supplies and the troops are put on half-rations. Until arrival at Capetown 3 weeks later Apollo is a famine-ridden ship, and sentries with drawn cutlasses stand guard over the water-tank night and day.
