First day of the Battle of the Somme. The worst day in the history of the British Army, which suffers 57,470 casualties, including 463 men (out of 700) of the 1st East Lancashires, and 594 (out of 720) from the 11th East Lancashires,who the nation will mourn ever afterwards as the Accrington Pals.
