This Day in History: 1691-06-29

Nine Years War. At Genappe in the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium), King William III (William of Orange) reviews 15 battalions of the English army, including Castleton’s Regiment (later 30th Foot and then 1st East Lancashires).  News of the decisive English naval victory of Barfleur is celebrated with ‘a triple discharge of 140 pieces of cannon answered by as many volleys of small shot from the two lines of the army’.
