This Day in History: 1800-10-06

Off Cadiz, Spain, a vast fleet of 200 ships carrying over 20,000 troops, including both the 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) prepares to launch a raid on the port. After days of orders and counter-orders, including at least one occasion when the troops were actually in the assault boats, a combination of heavy weather and adverse winds gives the reluctant British commanders a welcome reason not to attack the plague-ridden city.
