This Day in History: 1781-09-06

In a confused, and savagely-fought assault, with both sides claiming atrocities and treachery by the other, 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) leads the storming of Fort Griswold, Connecticut. The 40th loses about a quarter of its strength killed or wounded, in the bloodiest action fought by the Regiment in its 65 years of service in North America.
