This Day in History: 1849-08-06

Aboard the troopship Apollo, carrying the 59th Foot (later 2nd East Lancashires ) to Hong Kong, there is a final death from cholera. It makes a total of 18 over the previous 50 days. The next day, Apollo reaches Rio de Janeiro. Still in quarantine, no contact with the shore is permitted, but after some days it is arranged for the ship to be escorted down to Ilha Grande, an island about sixty miles to the south-west, where the Regiment can disembark and camp.
