This Day in History: 1812-04-06

Spain. In one of the hardest fights ever fought by the British Army, both the 30th and 40th Regiments (later 1st East Lancs and 1st South Lancs respectively) suffer very heavy casualties assaulting the fortress of Badajoz. Nearly 5,000 Allied soldiers die in a few hours of frantic fighting. Enraged by their losses, British troops run riot in the city. It takes 3 of the most shameful days in the history of the British Army to restore discipline.
