This Day in History: 1746-05-24

Three companies of the 30th Foot (later 1st East Lancashires) arrive at Louisbourg, on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, recently captured from the French. They have taken almost a year to get there from Britain, having been delayed by adverse winds in the Leeward Islands, and then by want of a naval escort from Virginia. They garrison the massive fortress, then probably the most extensive (and expensive) in North America, for the next 2 years, but suffer severely for want of warm clothing and sufficient food.
