This Day in History: 1916-05-21

Temporary Lieutenant Richard Jones, 8th Loyals, earns a posthumous VC at the Broadmarsh Crater, Vimy, France. While holding a recently-captured crater, his isolated platoon came under attack by overwhelming enemy numbers. Inspiring his men by his personal example, he shot 15 of the oncoming enemy. Out of ammunition, he stood up to throw a bomb and was killed instantly by a shot through the head.
