This Day in History: 1801-07-05

In garrison at Cape Town during the Cape of Good Hope War, Brevet Lt Col Brock, 81st Regiment (later 2nd Loyals), is killed in a duel with Captain Menzies of the 22nd Regiment, ‘in consequence of his (Brock) having, as steward at a public ball, very properly resisted the introduction by his antagonist of a female of disreputable character.’ On the same day Lieutenant Mackay of the 91st is mortally wounded in a second duel with Ensign Monteith, also of the 81st.
