American War of Independence. Battle of Germantown. Surrounded and embattled in the Chew House, determined defence by the 40th Foot (later 1st South Lancashires) saves the day and turns General George Washington’s initial success into a British victory. At the climax of the fight 120 men of the 40th, barricaded in the house, are under attack by nearly 2,000 troops from 17 separate regiments.
