81st Foot (later 2nd Loyals), under orders for garrison duties on Jersey, shipwrecked in the island’s St Aubyn’s Bay when their ship, the fine 24-gun frigate HMS Determinee, captured from the French in 1799, strikes a submerged rock. At least 10 soldiers, 2 women and 3 children from the Regiment are drowned.
