This Day in History: 1842-03-10

1st Afghan War. Quartermaster Phillips of the 40th (later 1st South Lancashires) prevents a probably-fatal breach of the walls of Kandahar by removing faggots from the Citadel Gate before they can by set alight. With the main force absent on a mission, 94 sick and wounded from the 40th, fighting in their hospital clothing, help a scratch defence force beat off a determined Afghan assault.
