This Day in History: 1709-10-03

HMS Anglesey, 50 guns, with her Marines drawn from Wills’ Marines (later 30th Foot and then 1st East Lancashires), traps a French privateer in Sandwich Bay. The Frenchman is run aground and captured, after a spirited defence, by a boarding party probably mainly drawn from the Marines. Lieutenant Richard Leathat of Wills’ Marines is disabled in the action.
