This Day in History: 1689-03-08

Sir George Saunderson, 5th Viscount Castleton, of Saxby in Lincolnshire and Sandbeck in Yorkshire, receives a commission from William of Orange, newly installed King of England following the Glorious Revolution of 1688, to raise a regiment of foot. Castleton’s Regiment later became the 30th Foot, and then 1st Battalion The East Lancashire Regiment, and is thus the earliest unit to which the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment could trace its roots.
