This Day in History: 1811-04-03

Peninsular War. Combat of Sabugal. Anglo-Portuguese force under General Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington) inflicts defeat on the French, finally forcing them out of Portugal at the end of their failed invasion of 1810. The Light Company of the 2nd/30th Foot (later 1st East Lancashires) splashes across the River Coa to take the village of Sabugal without opposition or casualties, where they enjoy a fine hot dinner hastily abandoned minutes before by the enemy.
