This Day in History: 1942-02-15

Singapore surrenders. After days of desperate fighting, at about 7.30pm 2nd Loyals fire on some Japanese troops near Gilman Barracks. They are possibly the last shots fired in the disastrous Malayan campaign, as shortly afterwards the cease fire is ordered. 2nd Loyals are reduced to 289 all ranks. 18th Recce (late 5th Loyals, the Bolton Territorials) have lost 55 men killed since their traumatic rescue from the blazing Empress of India just 11 days before. For both battalions, it is the start of 3 and a half years of terrible privations at the hands of their Japanese captors.
