Operation Veritable, first phase of the Allied campaign to enter Germany and move up to the Rhine, begins. 1200 guns fire 500,000 rounds on the first day. 1st East Lancashires, assigned to breach the Siegfried Line in the Reichswald Forest, assemble at Nijmegen, cross the frontier into Germany at precisely 18.00 hrs, and then the start line later that evening. By dawn next day, despite fierce opposition, they have breached the German defence trenches and are firm on their initial objectives.
