This Day in History: 1862-01-11

Private Patrick McCaffery, aged 19, is hanged at Kirkdale Gaol, Liverpool. Four months earlier, in an incident which has echoed down the years ever since, he killed the Commandant and the Adjutant at Fulwood Barracks, Preston, with a single shot. His ghost is said to haunt the Barracks, and a mildly subversive Irish folk song about the incident is said to have been banned in the British Army until relatively recently, although no evidence has ever been found to support this.
